REPUBLIKA.CO.ID – The European Union congratulated the launching of an Indonesian filmmaker’s work entitled 99 Cahaya di Langit Eropa (Light in the Europe Sky Part 2) which describes the diversity and richness of the cultural heritage of Europe .
“This film managed to review the legacy and heritage of Islam in European countries, a legacy that is less known by many people,” said Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Indonesia, Colin Brooks, in a written statement received here on Saturday (8/3/14 ).
According to Brooks, the film reminds that Islam is not only a way of life but it is an integral and important part in the history of Europe. He admitted that the film was important in encouraging the need for better tolerance and things that need to be done to end racism and xenophobia in Europe and in the other hemisphere.
“The film reminds us that the EU motto ‘ Unity in Diversity’, which is similar to the Indonesian motto ‘Bhinneka Tunggal Ika’, is a slogan that needs to be applied in everyday life,” said Brooks .
Brooks added the movie “99 Light in the Europe Sky” illustrates the EU priorities in the field of education. According to him, as a whole at the moment there are about 4,000 Indonesian students in Europe.
“99 Light in the Europe Sky” is considered to reflect the importance of inter-religious community tolerance and the promotion of higher education in Europe. The film, directed by Guntur Soeharjanto was adapted from a novel by Hanum Salsabiela Rais and her husband, Rangga Almahendra.
The film tells of their experiences while living in Austria when Rangga is doing his doctoral program in economy and busines at the Vienna University. In addition, the film also describes the journey in exploring the cultural heritage of Islam in Austria, France, Spain, and Turkey .
