‘Sang Kyai’ won the Best Feature Film at the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) 2013 in Semarang, Central Java, Saturday night, 7/12, and it will be sent to compete in the Academy Awards 2014. The movie is starred by Ikranegara, Christine Hakim, Adipati Dolken and Agus Kuncoro.
The film, directed by young Indonesian director Rako Prijanto, tells about KH Hasyim Asy’ari and his struggle during Japanese occupation and revolutionary era. He drove the spirit of struggle of Indonesians by issueing a kind of fatwa (religious edict) ‘Resolusi Jihad’ (Jihad Resolution) to fight against the Dutch and Allied forces.
Asy’ari was a respectful Muslim scholar who established the Islamic boarding school Pesantren Tebu Ireng and Nahdhatul Ulama Islamic organisation. He is grandfather of former Indonesian president KH Abdurrahman ‘Gus Dur’ Wahid.
