“A prominent activity of Sukarno during his exile in Ende was his attempt to explore the teachings of Islam. Sukarno’s understanding about Islam was more sharply especially after he established correspondence with A Hasan, a leader of the Persatuan Islam (Persis) of Bandung.

Correspondence between the two, containing pithy dialogue about Islam. Islam is Progress, Sukarno said in one of his letters. Sukarno considered Islam as a powerful mean of struggle to achieve ideals of freedom. Islam is essentially progress, therefore Muslims should be facing the future with a “flame of burning Islam”.
